Challenging behavior does not make your dog bad—and needing help does not make you a bad owner.
Get practical, personalized support from an experienced dog trainer who works with your dog, your family, and your everyday environment.

Barking, jumping, pulling, chewing, ignoring cues, or struggling to settle can make everyday life stressful. These behaviors often show us that a dog needs clearer expectations, more appropriate outlets, additional skills, or support navigating their environment.
Zen Canine helps families understand what may be contributing to a behavior and develop a realistic plan for improving it.
Our private, 1-on-1 approach is personalized to your dog’s temperament, learning history, household, and daily routines.

Teach calmer responses to visitors, activity, noises, and other everyday triggers.

Build more polite ways for your dog to greet family members, visitors, and people in the community.

Improve communication, attention, and walking skills so outings feel more manageable.

Help your dog develop an off-switch and learn how to relax when nothing exciting is happening.

Provide appropriate outlets while improving supervision, routines, and household management.

Use gradual, supportive exercises to help your dog feel more secure in appropriate situations.

Work on boundaries, listening skills, door manners, stealing items, counter surfing, and other everyday challenges.

Navigate the increased energy, independence, and boundary-testing that often appear as puppies mature.
Dog behavior does not happen in isolation. Your dog’s environment, routines, experiences, physical needs, and family interactions can all influence what you see.
We focus on practical strategies that fit your household instead of applying the same solution to every dog.
Your training plan may include:
It is never too late to begin building clear, positive habits.
Meet with you, your family, and dog in the home. We discuss your concerns, observe relevant routines, and identify your most important goals.
Your trainer creates practical recommendations based on your dog, household, environment, and learning needs. Private training allows us to focus on daily life situations. Sessions may take place in your home or community, depending on your dog's needs and training goals.
Instead of following a one-size-fits-all class curriculum, you receive personalized guidance, direct feedback, and practical strategies your family can use.
We demonstrate each strategy and coach family members through the skills needed to support progress.
Consistency is easier when everyone in the family understands the plan.
Our family-focused coaching helps household members use the same cues, expectations, and responses. When appropriate, children can also learn age-appropriate ways to interact with and support their dog.
Behavior change takes repetition. We monitor progress, adjust the plan when needed, and help your family build sustainable habits.
This is when virtual coaching becomes the most valuable.
Some challenging behaviors are made worse by boredom, frustration, excess energy, or a lack of appropriate outlets.
Purposeful enrichment can help dogs use their minds, build confidence, practice problem-solving, and express natural behaviors in constructive ways.
Behavior and physical health are closely connected. Training is most effective when pain, illness, medication effects, and other medical factors have been considered.
We may recommend contacting your veterinarian before or alongside training if your dog experiences:
New aggression, fearfulness, withdrawal, restlessness, sleep changes, reduced activity, or behavior that seems out of character may indicate pain, illness, or physical discomfort.
House-training challenges are not always behavioral. A urinary tract infection, bladder problem, digestive illness, or intestinal parasite may cause increased urgency, frequent elimination, diarrhea, or accidents indoors.
Veterinary support may be especially important if your dog:
Resistance to grooming, harnessing, nail care, lifting, petting, or being touched in a particular area may be related to pain rather than unwillingness to cooperate.
A veterinary evaluation may be appropriate if your dog suddenly flinches, freezes, growls, snaps, avoids touch, struggles with stairs, moves differently, or becomes reluctant to participate in activities they previously enjoyed.
Some medications can affect appetite, thirst, urination, energy, sleep, or behavior. For example, increased hunger or more frequent urination may make food manners or house training temporarily more difficult.
Tell us about any medications or recent dosage changes so we can adapt training appropriately. Questions about side effects, dosing, or medication changes should always be discussed with the prescribing veterinarian. Do not stop or adjust medication without veterinary guidance.
Severe anxiety, panic, self-injury, repeated biting, or aggression toward people or animals may require support beyond standard dog training.
A veterinarian can evaluate possible medical contributors. A board-certified veterinary behaviorist can diagnose behavioral conditions and, when appropriate, combine behavior modification with medical treatment.
A trainer does not diagnose medical conditions, perform medical tests, or prescribe medication. Depending on your dog’s symptoms, your veterinarian may recommend a physical examination, pain assessment, urinalysis, fecal testing, medication review, or other diagnostics.
When veterinary care is needed, Zen Canine can work alongside your veterinary team to support a safe, practical training plan. If another professional is better qualified to serve your dog, we will be honest about that recommendation.
The first step is understanding your dog, your household, and the behavior that is making life difficult.
